« Answers to common issues or concerns with Mobile17. »

no money required Remember, Mobile17 *will never bill you for anything* without permission. (Don't worry!)

Will Mobile17 ever sell my cellphone number, or send me SPAM?

Never. We want you to keep using Mobile17, please feel-safe here!

Will I receive any charges on my monthly-bill from Mobile17?

Not from us, without your permission. Most of our services are offered at no-charge, and for these we'd never need to bill you for anything. The advertisements on the website cover our costs.

First off, don't worry. If you opt for one of our premium services (like the “Pro” user-accounts, completely optional and well-differentiated from no-charge services), we still cannot bill you without your confirmation via a text-message response that you must write directly to us. So, you're safe. Plus we usually use Google Checkout for those services anyway, not cellphone billing. You'll know what's going on, we're not out to trick you.

Again, we never trick you into paying for anything on Mobile17. We want you to stay here. Mobile17 is a safe-haven for mobile-content and mobile fun!

Please note: While this service is provided by Mobile17 at no-charge, carrier-charges may still apply. Check to make sure that you're not going to be billed for normal text-messaging, picture-messaging, or web-usage.

Did Mobile17 bill-me for something unexpected?

No. We are not shady, and cannot do this to you. We want you to trust us and keep using Mobile17. Most of our services are offered at no-charge and not once require your confirmation to issue a charge to your mobile-phone bill.

If you opt for one of our premium services, we'll even ask you to confirm the charge to-your-bill in an SMS text-message... something you must respond to manually and cannot do by accident. This is for your security and peace-of-mind! We're not like those other-guys.

Are you going to send me “junk” text-messages or emails?

No! We will never do this... ever. We don't even have the systems in place to do such a thing, and would never want to either.

If you are receiving junk text-messages from somewhere, it is impossible for them to be coming from us. However, try replying to one with 'STOP' (without the quotes) and they usually go away. Or, call your service-provider and see if they can help you.

I never received an email from Mobile17!

Check your ‘Junk Mail’ or SPAM folder. We're always working to make sure our registration emails are delivered everywhere, but we send so many they can sometimes get caught in filters. All notices come from noreply@mobile17.com — you can always add this to your address book!

My phone (make/model) isn't shown in the Library!

Check to see if it has been requested in the forums. If it hasn't, please post a “thread” about it so that other users can reply with the same request and/or know that we're working on it. ;)

It's been 15 minutes, and I didn't receive my text (SMS) or picture (MMS) message. What should I do?

Turn your phone off and back on, and it should show up. Messages always leave our system, but sometimes they are lost by providers, your phone may lose its signal/connection while downloading them, or your phone's memory doesn't have enough free-space to store them (try deleting some old stuff).

What if I have Verizon Wireless and haven't received my Picture Message?

Try signing-up for http://www.vzwpix.com, then use Mobile17 again.

The ringtone is saving into the “My Sounds” folder or ‘Media Center’ — I can't use it. What should I do?

Forward the ringtone (or the Picture Message it arrived in) to yourself at your phone-number. The new message will be able to set as a Ringtone. Also, you can try removing the memory-card from your phone (if it has one) before receiving our messages or downloads, but the first method is usually foolproof.

I tried to download my ringtone, but my phone returned a “Page Cannot Be Displayed” error... what should I do?

Try creating another ringtone with a shorter length. You may have exceeded your phone's memory or filesize limitations.

Verizon Wireless says I need to go VZWPIX.com or something... what should I do?

Picture Messaging is required for Verizon Wireless, but not enabled on your phone. Give them a call and just say “I would like picture messaging enabled on my phone, please!” — If you can already receive Picture Messages, try signing-up for http://www.vzwpix.com, then use Mobile17 again.

Where can I find my music on my computer? (when browsing)

Mobile17 supports MPEG Audio (*.MP3), Windows Media Audio (*.WMA), Ogg Vorbis (*.OGG), and iTunes AAC (*.M4A) — in other words, every common digital-format available today.

On Windows, your music is usually inside the “My Music” folder, which is inside of “My Documents”. On a Mac, your music should be located inside the “Music” folder (usually shown on the left-side of each “browsing” window), or inside of your user account.

Mobile17 couldn't read my audio-file, what could this mean?

Mobile17 can read most music-files, but unfortunately some of them may be corrupted or unreadable. Sometimes, they are encrypted or protected... such as older-files purchased from the iTunes Music Store. Most music stores no longer encrypt their files, but any files purchased before such changeover will still not work. For example ‘iTunes Plus’ files (now standard for purchases from iTunes) have always converted flawlessly, but legacy iTunes ‘.m4p’ files do not. Newer downloads from iTunes have the ‘.m4a’ extension, which work with Mobile17.

Similarly, other Music Stores such as Walmart, Amazon, or Buy Music have encrypted their downloads in the past, but may no longer do so. Those older files will still not work, but any newer downloads should.

Where can I find my photos on my computer?

On Windows, your photos are usually inside the “My Photos” folder, which is inside of “My Documents”. On a Mac, your photos should be located inside the “Photos” folder (usually shown on the left-side of each “browsing” window), or inside of your user account.

Where can I find Polyphonic ringtone-files online?

There are two websites we usually recommend. The first is MIDI Database, the second is MIDIsite. Both of these have a fairly reliable selection, and once you find a file that you like... simply right-click the link to it (Macintosh users hold the Control-key on your keyboard and click) and choose either "Save Target As...", "Download Linked File...", or a similar option to save it to your computer.

Where can I find Animated Screensaver-files online?

The best way is to Google search for Animated GIFs. Once you find an animation that you like... simply right-click the animation (Macintosh users hold the Control-key on your keyboard and click) and choose either "Save Image As...", "Download Image...", or a similar option to save it to your computer.

Where can I find other files for my phone? (software, video, etc.)

As of now, there aren't many reliable sources for these. You can either convert your own video on your computer (we're not doing this for you yet) or try to find them online. Software, in particular, is usually copyrighted unless given away for free, so be careful.

I can't save the ringtone or graphic!

It could be that your phone's memory is full; try deleting some older content that you might want to replace. Or, if you're creating a ringtone, shorten the length of that tone (in seconds).

My phone says I need a “Handler” to use this ringtone?

The ringtone that you've created is too long. Try limiting it to 15 seconds.... If that works then gradually increase the length until you've found something desirable, yet reliable.

What are standard-texting rates? Will I be charged for those?

Standard rates are what your service provider charges you to receive or reply to a text (SMS) or picture (MMS) message. That's it. If you have a messaging-plan where you get unlimited or a few hundred included messages per-month, then you're all set! However, if you do not have one of these plans, you may be billed by your service provider somewhere between 1 and 30 cents.

Note: If your service-provider charges for web-usage, and you do not have a data plan, you should add one before using Mobile17... but only if you download from our site via ‘Mobile Web’. You should be able to add this feature to your mobile-phone's account for only a few dollars a month, and it will allow unlimited-use of Mobile17's features. Most phones already have a data plan included with any messaging plans.

I received the ringtone in my email... but it's not on my phone. What do I do now?

For phones like Apple's iPhone, you need to install the ringtone manually. While this process is very simple (literally you just have to open it in iTunes and it will automatically add itself to your ‘Ringtone’ list) ...we agree it's still a pain. In the meantime, for other phones like this, the process is similar but requires the software that was provided with that phone. Post in our forums if you run into trouble!

How do I install wallpapers to my Apple iPhone?

PC/Windows Users: Download the picture into your 'My Pictures' folder, which is inside of the ‘My Documents’ folder on your Desktop or Start Menu, then plug in your iPhone! It soon will appear in the ‘Photos’ section.

Mac Users: Download the picture, and drag it onto the ‘iPhoto’ icon at the bottom of your screen. Then, plug in your iPhone! It soon will appear in the ‘Photos’ section.

My iPhone ringtones won't work! It says they cannot be played and won't be transferred...

Install the latest-version of the iPhone software on your phone. Click the “Check For Update” button under your iPhone's settings portion of iTunes. If this still doesn't work after the update is installed on your phone, grab the latest version of iTunes and the problem will be solved.

My phone says the tone cannot be over 30kb!

Try creating a 6 second long ringtone. That should work.

My phone says the file already exists, but won't let me rename it!

Turn your phone off, remove its memory card, turn it back on, then try again. That should work.

I got the Picture message (MMS), but there was no ringtone, or it says “Network Authentication Failed”. (Verizon)

If you extended the length of your ringtone past the default setting of 25 seconds, this can sometimes occur. Try creating a shorter tone, but let us know if you continue to experience issues.
